Mobile start-up Red Robot has secured funding of $8.5 million for its location-based MMO Life is Crime.

Life is Crime has users commit virtual crimes in real-life locations such as fighting other users or selling contraband, Gamasutra reports.

Existing investors include former Facebook executive Chamath Palihapitiya and Playdom’s Rick Thompson. However the recent multi-million dollar investment comes from Benchmark Capital and Shasta Ventures, the studio said.

The game is available on the Android Market, as well as having an iOS app.
