As per Videotechuk_ on X, Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the fourth best-selling game of all time with 79 million units sold, however, this is on the leniency of not including Tetris. While nothing is official right now, these sales could increase in the future as rumors about an upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S persist, along with a release of the game for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Take-Two Interactive has shared their November 6th earnings report presentation, and it features a slide dedicated to the sales of the Red Dead Redemption franchise. It mentions that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold a collective total of 79 million units, which makes it the “best-selling title of the past 7 years in the US based on dollar sales”. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption as a series has sold a combined total of 106 million units worldwide.

As the fourth best-selling game of all time, RDR2 needs another three million sales to bypass Wii Sports which has sold 82.9 million. That is definitely doable, however, beating GTA 5 at over 200 million and Minecraft at over 300 million is neigh on impossible.

Although RDR2 is being recognised as the fourth best-selling game, it is fifth if you wish to include Tetris into the equation. IGN lists Tetris as their best-selling video game ever with over 500 million sales, but the Guinness World Records lists Minecraft. This is because the Guinness World Records instead recognises Tetris as the world’s most ported video game as well as the second best-selling video game series behind only Mario.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Current-Gen Upgrade Rumors

With Tetris not included, Red Dead Redemption 2 seems likely to become the third best-selling video game of all time as rumors about a current-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S persist, as well as a Nintendo Switch 2 release.

This all started with prominent leaker, NateTheHate, reaffirming that a RDR2 current-gen upgrade does “exist”. As of October 30th, NateTheHate has posted, “The game is still happening. I don’t have any update on timing. All I was ever told was it would be a few months after the Switch 2 launch”.

In addition to NateTheHate, Kiwitalkz has discussed the Red Dead Redemption 2 current-gen upgrade. Following the GTA 6 delay, the prominent game developer interviewer posted, “In regards to RDR2 for Switch 2, Series S/X and PS5 my guess is they [Rockstar] were waiting to see whether they could hit the date for GTA 6 before deciding when to release it, I am betting RDR2 gets released soon as a result of this”. Kiwitalkz isn’t confirming anything will come out soon, but they are hoping it will be released before Black Friday otherwise they have doubts for 2025 at all.

We don’t know anything about the leaked upgrade other than it reportedly including 60 FPS and coming out on Switch 2. There were also rumors about a current-gen port for GTA 4, but that has gone quiet unlike RDR2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest video games of all time, and recently Rockstar co-founder, Dan Houser, said Arthur Morgan is his greatest lead character ever created albeit in a toss-up with Niko. RDR2 is an absolute masterpiece, and we truly hope this current-gen port emerges soon to help soften the blow of the second GTA 6 delay to November next year.
