According to data published by the NPD Group – much later than is usual – Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption topped the video games sales chart in the US with a combined 1.5 million units on Xbox 360 and PS3.

It was the Xbox 360 version which dominated, moving a massive 945,900 units; almost twice that of the PS3’s 567,100 units. Super Mario Galaxy 2 also had a strong showing with 563,900 units sold.

Next came THQ’s UFC 2010, which sold 221,100 on Xbox 360 and 192,300 on PS3. Other notable new entries (sadly without sales figures) are Alan Wake at No.8 and Skate 3 on Xbox 360 at No.10. There’s no place in the Top 10 for Activision’s Blur, which arrived in stores on May 25.

Hardware sales paint a very familiar picture, with Nintendo’s duo dominating proceedings. The DS came out on top with 383,700 units, followed by Wii with 334,800, Xbox 360 with 194,600, PS3 with 154,500 and the PSP with a paltry 59,400 units.

It will be interesting to see how the introduction of the slim Xbox 360 affects sales in June.
