While Viva Piñata has failed to be the commercial success Rare and Microsoft had hoped it would be, it seems that they’re not ready to put it on the scrap heap just yet. The game received rave reviews from the video game press and Rare is keen to support the franchise for some time yet.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Lee Schuneman, head of production at Rare said: “We’re pleased with the overall support that it’s got and there’s more to come within that franchise. We’d obviously like more sales, but we were happy with the game and critically it’s gone down very well.”

One reason why the game hasn’t faired as well as hoped, at least in Europe, is the lack of TV show to attract kids to the series in the first place. This CG show has been airing in the US since last year, but only started on Nick Toons in the UK this week. According to Schuneman “it’s due in the rest of Europe later this year.

Summing up, Schuneman added: “It’s a two or three year push, and if after that it’s a terrible failure then we’ll say fair enough.”

Let’s hope the TV show gives the game a much needed push, as it’s a very good game indeed.
