Following its rocky launch, Rainbow Six Siege has only gone from strength to strength. The squad based shooter recently surpassed 20 million registered players, and it’s not planning on stopping any time soon. The next step for the game is to reach (and pass) 100 operators, which is ambitious because it’s only just increased to 34 with the recent Blood Orchid update.

Rainbow Six Siege’s product director, Nicolas Lefebvre, discussed Ubisoft’s plans for the game going forward in an interview with PCGamer.Lefebvre confirmed there’s a long lifespan planned for the game, saying, ‘Oh yeah, we are looking at developing the game with 100 Operators—I’ll let you do the math and work out how many years that does. There’s no reason for us to stop there.’

Previously Ubisoft was aiming for a minimum total of 50 operators, and the Rainbow Six Siege brand director, Alexandre Remy, confirmed this, stating that, ‘The moment that we hit 50 operators, that’s the minimum that we actually want’.

Going by the rough estimate given by Lefebvre this should take Ubisoft at least 7-8 years at its current pace to get there. That’s a lot of season passes.

For a studio that’s better known as one which tends to annualise its releases, this new approach ties neatly into Ubisoft’s games as a service focus, where it’ll continue supporting a game for a number of years.
