Codemasters has today announced the summer 2008 release of Race Driver: GRID for Nintendo DS. This handheld version will release simultaneously with the previously announced home console and PC versions.

Designed specifically for the Nintendo DS, Race Driver: GRID promises to be the most complete pick-up-and-play racing package available to buy this summer. Players will be able to jump straight into the easily accessible racing action, with a range of quick fire challenges offering gamers on the move short bursts of racing gameplay.

Also tucked away in the tiny cart is a complete career mode which will see players travelling the world, racing in Europe (Spa and the Nurburgring), America (San Francisco to Washington DC) and Japan (drift racing on the streets of Shibuya).

Exclusive to the Nintendo DS version is the acclaimed track editor first seen in Race Driver: Create and Race. Now with over 60 individual track pieces, the track creation tool offers “near-limitless” options, including the ability to personalise trackside hoardings and billboards. Using the Free-Draw tool entire championship circuits can be created in only minutes – the game taking a hand-drawn track outline and converting it into an in-game circuit.

There’s also the promise of online and wireless multiplayer modes, with four players able to take part in a custom race series. Custom tracks can be shared and new circuits can be uploaded or downloaded from the Race Driver: GRID servers.
