Double Fine has announced in a backer update last night that it is now looking at next year to release long awaited action platforming sequel, Psychonauts 2.

The delay news was originally announced during E3, but went somewhat went under the radar with the news that Microsoft was acquring developer Double Fine Productions. But an update post overnight on the game's Fig page re-addressed the delay directly to backers, saying: 'We’re now targeting next year for release. We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand!'

The team are also keen to point out that, despite Microsoft taking over publishing duties from Starbreeze as part of the acquisition, any backers who ordered the game on PlayStation 4 will still have their pledges honoured without issue as promised. It's hardly the first delay for the game, with Psychonauts also missing out on releasing back in 2018, but at that time no new date was set.

In addition, Double Fine also put out a video going behind the scenes of their E3 announcements – including how Tim Schafer felt about how it felt to go on Xbox's stage after Keanu freakin' Reeves -which you can watch embedded below.
