The ongoing row between importers and Sony over the right to sell imported PSP consoles months before the official European Release on September 1st has revealed some news that could delay the launch even further.

It has been revealed that Sony do not hold European trademarks for the names PSP, UMD and XMB (a PSP operating system component). Sony’s failure to capture these trademarks could lead to a number of substantial problems for the Electronics Giant. A launch delay could be a possibility while Sony seek to secure the trademarks required or even a possible re-branding of the PSP, which Sony will be reluctant to carry out after a successful launch in both the US and Japan.

The September release of the PSP, originally expected to arrive in March, is the reason for the popularity of import PSP purchases, and as Dan Morelle of ElectricBirdLand points out, this is a problem caused by Sony:

Sony Computer Entertainment is well known for fudged product launches and this is another perfect example,” explained Dan Morelle, Managing Director, ElectricBirdLand. “The threat of legal action is not because Sony is concerned about the impact that small importers like us will have on its brand or sales – it’s simply because of their inability to implement something so vital to the success of its new product.
