Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the cumulative unit sales of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) have reached the 70 million mark. It was originally released on December 12, 2004 in Japan, before being released March 2005 in North America, May of the same year in Asian countries and regions, and September in Europe/PAL territories.

In a statement, Sony also said “more than 3200 titles on UMD are available worldwide, with cumulative software sales reaching 298 million to date.”

Both these hardware and software figures will be comforting news to Sony on the same day that it revealed the successor to its original handheld, the PS Vita – due for release worldwide by the end of 2011.
