With demand for the Sony PSP increasing and the European launch looming (September 1st), Sony seem slightly concerned over the number of units they are producing. Speaking to Bloomberg, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi talked about possibly outsourcing production of the handheld.
“We have to somehow increase our production capacity as we’re not prepared to start selling in Europe, we’ve run out of units in the US and it’s still selling well in Japan. We’re making the key components here, but we’re looking to expand assembly of the product outside of Japan,” said Kutaragi.
It would seem that this outsourcing has already started, with the Taiwanese Hon Hai Precision Industry reportedly already winning the contract – the same company that builds PlayStation 2 consoles for Sony. Taipei newspaper the Commercial Times broke the news, but no official announcement has been made.
Hopefully, with the awful treatment Europe has already had to put up with, we won’t we facing severe shortages come September 1st, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising if crazy parents are offering to trade their non vital internal organs for a PSP this Christmas.
