As part of the next official PSP software update, Sony will include a web browser free of charge. Version 2.0 of the PSP update, to be released in Japan on July 27th, will for once include some features enticing PSP owners to install the update.
The free update will include a web browser, complete with security features and HTML 4.01 support, but currently lacks Flash support. The lack of Flash may be addressed in future updates. Update 2.0 will also include desktop wallpaper support and wireless (ad-hoc only) picture sharing.
The PSP’s audio visual support will also be boosted with full MP4 playback, ATRAC3plus Support, MP4 AAC and WAVE audio support. The range of viewable image types has also been expanded to include TIFF, BMP and GIF image files. UMD playback is to get skip and repeat functions.
Safety conscious PSP owners will be pleased to see the inclusion of WPA support to enable the use of secure wireless networks. It had been rumoured that other exciting apps such as a word processor and email client would be included in the update, but sadly this hasn’t happened.
Sony is playing a shroud game with this update. They know that that people want a web browser for the PSP, and are also aware of the growing PSP hacker community. Their only way to combat the hackers is to release updates that PSP users want to install, thus making the PSP hack proof. Releasing updates with games has angered some PSP owners who don’t wish to install the update required before the game can be played.
It is currently unknown if the European launch PSPs will be shipped with software version 2.0.
