According to a well regarded AMD leaker, Sony is planning to release the PS6 in 2027 “unless any unexpected delays happen”. The PS5 has been treated to an assortment of excellent games since releasing in 2020, and there are more exciting console exclusives on the way including Marvel’s Wolverine in 2026, as well as third-party games such as Grand Theft Auto 6. While it feels too soon to be considering the PS6, Sony are allegedly targeting a 2027 release window.

PS6 planned for 2027 release “unless any unexpected delays happen”

As spotted by The Game Post, well regarded and accurate AMD leaker, Kepler 2, posted on NeoGaf that a 2027 release for the PS6 is “Not just on the table, it’s the plan unless any unexpected delays happen”. This claim comes in wake of Sony publishing an almost 10-minutes video with AMD titled ‘From Project Amethyst to the Future of Play’.

Sony’s video with AMD is between Mark Cerny, lead architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro, as well as AMD’s Jack Huynh, SVP and GM, Computing and Graphics Group. In short, the video is a discussion between the pair “focused on Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay” and “a shared commitment to push gaming technology forward”. It hints at technology for the PS6, and in the video Mark Cerny alludes to a “future console in a few years time”.

Aside from Cerny alluding to the PS6 in a “few years time,” earlier in June Sony said the PS6 was “top of mind,” and that they are “committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services”.

Everything else about the console is just rumors, but there are persistent claims about a handheld companion. While nothing is official, Moore’s Law Is Dead shared PS6 console and handled specs reportedly from a “2023 AMD presentation to Sony”:

PS6 console:

  • Chiplet Design, with some mention of possibly utilizing “Navi 5” Desktop chiplets.
  • Backwards Compatibility to PS5 and PS4 Generations. (no mention of PS3)
  • Heavy Emphasis on Cost Constraints and keeping power lower than PS5.

  • 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units @1.6-2GHz

Remember that the above is only leaks and rumors rather than anything confirmed. As for releasing in 2027, this is where a lot of rumors fluctuate as some claim a 2027 release while others point to 2028. Neither seem far-fetched, but many players may feel it’s too soon as it took years for developers to stop supporting the PS4 and create experiences that truly feel as though they are pushing the PS5’s hardware. Grand Theft Auto 6 will most likely be the fullest realisation of current-gen hardware when it comes out next year, but that’s unfortunately six-years into the PS5’s lifecycle.

For North America and Europe, the PS1 came out in 1995 followed by the PS2 in 2000. We were then treated to the PS3 in 2007, and then the PS4 in 2013 followed by the PS5 in 2020. As we can see, Sony typically releases a new console almost every seven years, so a fall 2027 release is plausible. If the PS6 were to come out in 2028, it would cement the PS5 as Sony’s longest serving new console.
