The PlayStation 5 has had some fantastic games, but it only now really feels like current-gen is coming into its groove thanks to a long-reluctance from developers and publishers to stop supporting last-gen with the PS4. While many believe the PS5 hasn’t come close to realizing its full potential, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO has said that the PS6 is already “top of mind” with the console only a few years away. Nothing official about the system has been revealed yet, but PS6 console and handheld specs have possibly leaked online, with claims of “backwards compatibility for the PS5 and PS4”.

PS6 console specs leak

As shared on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, Moore’s Law is Dead has shared alleged leaked specs for the PS6. They have shared the supposed specs for the PS6 console codenamed Orion, as well as the heavily rumored PS6 handheld codenamed Canis.

In their video, Moore’s Law is Dead explains that the information they have comes from a “2023 AMD presentation to Sony,” which means some “specs really might have changed,” although they did “consult with someone that’s worked with Sony a lot in the past on their consoles and this person told me that Sony tends to stick with what their initial ideas were”.

Starting with the PS6, below is the alleged specs from Moore’s Law is Dead:

  • Chiplet Design, with some mention of possibly utilizing “Navi 5” Desktop chiplets.
  • Backwards Compatibility to PS5 and PS4 Generations. (no mention of PS3)
  • Heavy Emphasis on Cost Constraints and keeping power lower than PS5.
  • Manufacturing Planned for Mid-2027, with a likely Fall 2027 or Early-2028 Release Date.
  • 160W TBP
  • 8 x Zen 6 (or later) cores
  • 40-48 RDNA 5 Compute Units @3GHz+
  • 160-bit or 192-bit bus w/ GDDR7 @32GT/s+-
  • Rasterization Performance estimated to be ~3x PS6 (Ray Tracing Uplift Expected to be Higher)

In addition to the above, the graphic from Moore’s Law is Dead claims “It’s clear that PS6 started as a chiplet design that looked kinda like an RDNA 3 layout, but it’s also clear that AMD was trying to convince Sony to share dies with desktop… so it’s very possible that the final design could use AT3 or AT2 (like XBOX Magnus), and therefore it could end up getting more than 48 Compute Units… but likely the same or less than XBOX”.

PS6 handheld specs leak

And below is what Moore’s Law is Dead is alleging for the PS6 handheld codenamed Canis:

  • Monolithic 3nm Die (I was able to verify THIS in modern documents)
  • Backwards Compatibility to PS5 and PS4 Generations. (no mention of PS3)
  • 15W TBP
  • Canis includes a MicroSD Slot, M.2 SSD Slot, Haptic Vibration, Dual Mics, and a Touchscreen
  • Specifically, a diagram states that the USB-C port has video out capabilities!
  • 4 x Zen 6c Core
  • Manufacturing Planned for Mid-2027, with a likely Fall 2027 of 2028 Release Date.
  • 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units @1.6-2GHz
  • 128-bit bus w/ LPDDR5X-7500+
  • Rasterization Performance estimated to be ~0.5x PS5 (RT Expected to be higher than this)

In addition to the above, Moore’s Law is Dead states that “Canis should beat XBOX Ally X in performance, but it doesn’t come off as a ‘powerhouse’”. They also said, “Remember that Sony is preparing a PS5 ‘Low Power Mode’ currently… if benchmarks show large drop in performance with said ‘Low Power Mode’, I will take that as proof that it was added to provide devs with approximate PS6 Handheld Performance Early!”.

Remember that all the above is just alleged leaks rather than anything official. There has been the rumors of PS6 coming out in fall-2027 or early 2028 before, but all Sony has said that it is a few years away.
