Destiny and PlayStation 4 dominated video game sales in the US for September, The NPD Group has revealed.

PS4 sales nearly tripled over August to an approximate figure of 550,000 units, helped largely by the popularity of Activision’s Destiny. Analysts had believed Xbox One would outsell the PS4 this month, but it appears PS4 came out on top, though we don’t know by what margin.

Given PS4 was the top-selling console you’d think Destiny would have sold most on that system, but the standalone game actually moved more units on Xbox One, according to NPD. Microsoft offered a choice of a free game with the Xbox One during the week of September 7 with many new buyers probably opting for a copy of Destiny. A PS4 Destiny bundle was also available, but NPD doesn’t include bundle sales in its chart.

All this Destiny excitement helped the game become the biggest-selling game of the year so far, also securing the biggest launch month of a new IP of all time.

Nintendo also expressed its excitement at Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS being the No.4 best-selling game of the month with more than 705,000 total units sold. Over 135,000 of those were through the eShop. The fighting game helped 3DS sell more than 140,000 units in September.

Wii U hardware also saw “double-digit increases” in September, with sales up nearly 50 per cent over August. Nintendo attributed the increase in sales to Hyrule Warriors (190,000 combined retail and digital) and Mario Kart 8 which sold nearly 60,000 units in its fifth month. MK8 has sold nearly 1.2 million copies in the US.
