Details on the contents of PS4 update 5.50 are finally starting to trickle in this afternoon, with Sony now sending out beta invites (via Resetera) that confirm the patch will implement supersampling. Sadly, there’s no mention of the much-requested ability to change your PSN ID just yet.

Those of you lucky enough to have received invites for the beta will be able to test out this new feature soon enough, while everyone else will get their mitts on it when update 5.50 sees a general release.

What is supersampling however? Well, in layman’s terms, it’s a bit of technical wizardry that lets you improve the image quality of games running on a TV displaying a resolution of 2K or below. Results will vary depending on the title though, and in some cases the frame rate may take a bit of a knock.

Unfortunately it’s too late to sign up for the beta if you haven’t done so already, with the closing date having passed on January 23. There’s currently no word from Sony on when PS4 update 5.50 will be available to download.Â
