PS4 was once again the top-selling video game console in the US for the month of August, Sony confirmed to GamesBeat.

“We would like to thank our fans and partners for their ongoing support of PlayStation and for making PS4 the top selling console and No. 1 in software sales in North America in August,” stated Sony.

Xbox One might have come in second, but the console continues to see its momentum move in the right direction.

“Xbox One continued to gain momentum in August, with sales in the U.S. up 26 percent over August 2014,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols told GamesBeat.

The 26 per cent increase for Xbox One means the system sold approximately 202k units in August.

Nintendo declined to comment on Wii U sales.

Software sales were led by Madden NFL 16 and Minecraft, with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition charting 3rd. In fact, Xbox Exclusive Rare Replay also performed well at No.6, one spot ahead of Sony’s Until Dawn. It did launch earlier in the month, however.

Although Microsoft’s exclusives charted higher than Sony’s, Microsoft won’t be too pleased to see all multi-format titles – bar Minecraft and LEGO – selling better on PS4. In the case of Madden, bundled units with Xbox One systems aren’t counted by NPD, and the popularity of EA Access and its digital game discount is likely to push consumers towards digital purchasing.
