Strong sales of the PlayStation 4 helped Sony report profits in its Game division of $172 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2013.

Sony says it sold 7.8 million combined units of PS3 and PS4 (we know PS4 sold 4.2 million as of December 28), plus a further 2 million units of PSP/Vita.

The Game division recorded a 64.6 per cent rise in sales year-on-year to $4.2 billion.

All this saw Sony report an overall profit of $257 million and $22 billion in revenue. A “significant increase” in smartphone sales also made a positive impact.

Sony also announced that it is to sell its PC business, change its TV business, and layoff 5000 staff by the financial year end – 1500 in Japan and 3500 across other territories.

The TV business will be separated out into a wholly-owned subsidiary by July 2014, and focus on the growing 4K market.
