Sony will announce its “release plans” for PlayStation 4 during its press conference at Gamescom next week, the platform holder has revealed.

The news suggests that Sony is on the cusp of confirming a final release date for PS4, which is set to go on sale worldwide later this year.

“For one week in August 2013, the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany becomes the centre of the gaming universe as the world’s biggest publishers and developers invite you to check out the games that will light up the rest of the year and beyond,” Sony said on its website.

“We’ll kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.”

Sony will have PlayStation 4 hardware available for consumers to try on the show floor, as well as a range of PS3 and PS Vita titles.

Earlier this month, retailer notifications suggested that all day one stock of PS4 had been allocated, revealing that pre-orders placed beyond August 6, 2013 could not be guaranteed for launch.

Microsoft is also expected to announce a final release date for Xbox One during next week’s show.

Sony has already undercut Microsoft on price, but can it beat it to market as well? A release ahead of Xbox One would put PS4 in prime position to secure a healthy early install base.
