PS4 Pro is “about twice as powerful” as the current PS4, according to Guerrilla Games’ art director Jan-Bart Van Beek.

Speaking immediately after PlayStation Meeting last night, Van Beek explained that the new console is “about twice as powerful, actually probably a little bit more even, and there’s also extra CPU boost so it’s a little faster there as well.

“It can do things very close to 4K, and that’s an amazing achievement in itself. Looking at our own game [Horizon: Zero Dawn], it already looks very good at 1080p, but now at 4K it’s really, really so crisp and refined.”

“There’s also a couple of extra little pieces of hardware in there that are really clever, really nice refinements,” added Insomniac’s Al Hastings. “In addition to the 2x improvement to the GPU’s core horsepower, there’s a few extra twists that help you achieve that 4K level of fidelity.”

PS4 Pro features an improved 4.2 TFLOPS GPU over the standard PS4’s 1.84 TFLOPS GPU. It also benefits from an improved CPU, although the 8GB of GDDR5 memory remains the same.

But while the specs are not enough to render most AAA titles at native 4K, Sony hopes to achieve a 4K-quality resolution by implementing a new ‘checkerboard rendering’ technique, which has already left tech experts Digital Foundry impressed.

PS4 Pro launches November 10 priced £349.99. Pre-order the PS4 Pro now from Amazon(?)
