Update: Sony Interactive Entertainment head Andrew House has told The Guardian that the company does not see physical media being a major player in the home video space going forward, explaining its decision to leave a UHD Blu-ray player out of the PS4 Pro spec. Furthermore, House says such a feature cannot be added via a firmware update.
“Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming,” he said. “Certainly with our user base, it’s the second biggest use case for people’s time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area.”
Instead the focus will be on services such as Netflix with shows including Narcos and Luke Cage making full use of PS4 Pro’s 4K abilities.

Original report: PS4 Pro will not include a UHD 4K Blu-ray player, Sony has confirmed to BBC News journalist Rob Crossley.
Instead, it will feature a standard Blu-ray drive similar to the existing PS4 and PS4 Slim, and be capable of streaming 4K video content from Netflix and YouTube.
The decision seems a major oversight by Sony given the console’s 4K push. As detailed by Sony last night, the new console will take advantage of new rendering techniques to support a “4K quality resolution” and High Dynamic Range.
A 4K Blu-ray player is included as standard with Microsoft’s new Xbox One S and is expected to feature in next year’s Xbox Scorpio.
