Sony sold 25 per cent fewer PS3s in the first quarter of its financial year, compared with the same period in 2010.
A total of 1.8 million PlayStation 3s were sold between April and June, whereas 2.4 million were snapped up during the same three months last year.
But game sales rose to 26.1 million – a rise of 1.3 million, or just under five per cent year-on-year.
Sony called out the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March as the major cause for the shortfalls. The publisher still predicts that total PS3 sales for the financial year will beat the previous 12 months, though.
Lifetime PS3 sales currently sit at 51.8 million.
The PSP shifted 1.8 million during the period, while the good old PS2 managed a comparable 1.4 million units. In Sony’s first financial quarter last year, the PS2 actually outsold the PSP by 1.6m to 1.2m.
