Famitsu reports that the launch of Sony’s redesigned slim PS3 helped the console shift an impressive 150,252 units during its first week on sale in Japan, setting a sales record for the console.

The previous best weekly total for the PS3 was set back at its launch in November 2006, when supply problems limited sales to 88,000.

New life to date sales for the PS3 in Japan stand at 3,431,964 units as of September 6, 2009.
