Developers working on titles for PlayStation Vita are free to explore the possibility of launching free-to-play games, SCEA senior staff developer support engineer Chris Norden has confirmed.

Speaking at a GDC Online session aimed at developers, Norden responded to the free-to-play question: “You are free to explore whatever business model you want. You’ll have to talk to your account manager, and say, ‘Here’s my idea, and here’s what I wanna do,’ but yes, you’re allowed to do that.”

Norden also revealed that any retail released PS Vita title will be available day and date via PSN.

“PSN is supported from day one, right out of the box at launch,” he said

Developers need only submit one version of the game, unlike the current PS3 method where a separate PSN version is required to be submitted for inclusion on the PS Store.

PS Vita launches in December in Japan and in the early part of 2012 in North America and Europe.

Free-to-play support could encourage many of the F2P MMOs currently available on PC to make the jump to Vita. Similarly, the micro-transaction model found in mobile titles could be supported if required.
