UK-based developer Automaton Games has unveiled a teaser trailer for its ambitious 400-player battle royale title, Mavericks: Proving Grounds. Sadly, for game that’s inevitably about shooting the crap out of each other, there’s a conspicuous lack of, well, shooting.

Right now it’s about all we have to go on, although it’s certainly pretty in terms of visuals. If you look closely, you can make out a soldier running in the background during one of the shots, but that’s about as exciting as it gets.

What is exciting however is the game’s concept. Mavericks is promising a ‘living and breathing’ 12km squared game world, as well as dynamic events like spreading wildfire among other highlights.

Mavericks is due to roll out in two flavours; first is the battle royale mode, which is scheduled to ship for the PC later this year and features 400 players slugging it out. The full game meanwhile is due in 2019 and supports a staggering 1000 concurrent players in an ‘ultra-high fidelity world.’

‘This year, we’re coming out with our competitive, Battle Royale-style mode, which we hope will show that there is so much more for that genre than what people have seen today,” Automaton told PC Gamer. ‘How much more we can do with the game world and the [Battle Royale] game mode as a whole.’

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently dominating the battle royale genre right now, although by comparison that game supports 100 players max. There’s also Fortnite from Epic Games, which recently set a new record for concurrent players on Steam.
