Microsoft is closing Project Spark, its free-to-play game-creation software.
The game has already been removed from the Xbox One Marketplace and Windows Store, with servers set to be taken offline from August 12. Once the servers have closed, players will no longer be able to download other players’ levels or upload their own. Microsoft advises that players download their favourite levels prior to August 12 in order to be able to play them.
The game’s closure follows the cancellation of all its premium DLC last year, including new episodes of Conker’s Big Reunion.
“This was an extremely difficult decision for our team that we do not take lightly,” community manager Thomas Gratz wrote on the game’s forums. “When ‘Project Spark’ transitioned away from active development last fall, many of our team members moved to other projects within Microsoft Studios. While this means there have been no layoffs at Microsoft, it also means it’s simply no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping ‘Project Spark’ up and running with meaningful updates and bug fixes, so we have come to this hard decision.”
Project Spark launched on Xbox One and PC in October 2014.
