UPDATE: The project’s cancellation has now been confirmed by Slightly Mad Studios’ creative director Andy Tudor.

“Despite much perseverance on the Wii U version of Project CARS we will no longer be actively pursuing development on it as the quality does not meet our own high standards nor our intended vision for the title on this platform,” explained Tudor.

“We eagerly look forward to any announcement of further hardware from Nintendo but right now Project CARS is simply too much for Wii U despite our very best efforts.

“Apologies to our Nintendo fans out there that have been waiting for further news on this but have no desire to release a product that isn’t at the very least comparable with our highest-rated versions on other platforms. We optimistically look forward therefore to what the future may hold.”

ORIGINAL REPORT: The Wii U version of Project CARS has been cancelled, according to a report from Nintendo Life.

The game is “simply too much for the Wii U”, according to Slightly Mad Studio’s head Ian Bell, who told the site that the developer is “awaiting an announcement from Nintendo on new hardware”.

VideoGamer.com has contacted publisher Bandai Namco for confirmation of the game’s cancellation.

Concerns over the Wii U version first arose when Bandai Namco announced that the game would launch after the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions, and came to a head when Slightly Mad later suggested that it may wait for Nintendo’s next platform, the NX, to appear, admitting that the game was currently only running “at about 23fps on the Wii U”. The game targets 60fps on all other platforms.

Officially, the Wii U version is still scheduled to launch later this year.
