We’ve only had the pleasure of playing the first title in the acclaimed Professor Layton series, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, but in Japan the third and final chapter in the trilogy has just gone on sale.

According to IGN, at a commemoration press event held on Wednesday night in Tokyo it was announced that Professor Layton The First Movie, an animated film announced back at TGS, is now set for release in Japan on New Years Day 2010.

The Japanese version of the film will feature the same voice cast as the game, meaning Yo Oizumi returns as Layton and Maki Horikita will voice Ruke. There’s currently no word on a Western release, but given the growing popularity of the franchise outside of Japan localised releases could be on the cards.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village has shipped 830,000 units in North America, Europe and Korean markets, with over 100,000 units sold in the UK. In Japan the first two titles have sold a combined 1.75 million units and Nintendo has shipped a huge 700,000 units of the third game in anticipation of its popularity.
