Scum publisher Devolver Digital has confirmed that a set of Nazi-related tattoos found within a customisation pack have now been removed from the game.

Launching on Steam Early Access just a few days ago, Scum's Supporter Pack DLC contained a fresh set of inking that you can apply to your in-game convict, some of which were discovered to have been used by neo-Nazi groups.

Devolver was initially unaware of the link between the designs, notably the numbers 14 and 88, with Nazi propaganda, and has since apologised 'unreservedly' and plans to carry out a 'full review of all assets and content in the game with [developer] Gamepires.'

'Recently we patched out content from Scum that included neo-Nazi symbols. Our intention was to create an atmosphere of the worst of the worst criminals in Scum, and to portray the horrible type of people who would find themselves in a 'fight to the death' situation for a futuristic reality show where the worst criminals are pitted against one another,' commented Gamepires.

'Since our initial response on our forums we've discussed this as a team and with our publisher and agree wholeheartedly that this content was unnecessary, should not have been included, and have removed it. We apologize for this misstep and promise to our fans that we will take more caution in our approach moving forward.'

In addition, Devolver Digital told Polygon in a statement that it does 'not agree with use of this symbology or any hateful content, regardless of intention.'

Scum is marketed as a 'prison riot survival game' and sees 64 players attempting to escape a Mediterranean-flavoured island. It's already a pretty popular game, having sold 250,000 copies in its first 24 hours, while the full version is set to roll out at some point in 2019.
