Human Head Studios’ version of Prey 2 has been cancelled, Bethesda has finally confirmed.

Marketing boss Pete Hines discussed the cancellation with CNET during this week’s PAX Aus, telling the site: “It was [a] game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it.

“It wasn’t up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It’s no longer in development. That wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one that won’t surprise many folks given that we hadn’t been talking about it.”

He continued: “Human Head Studios is no longer working on. It’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with — we just need to see what that something is.”

Prey 2 has long been rumoured to have been cancelled, although Hines’ comments mark the first time Bethesda has acknowledged the project’s termination.

What isn’t clear, however, is whether the game has shifted development to Dishonored developer Arkane.

A Kotaku report posted last year claimed that “Arkane Austin is working on a rebooted version of Prey 2” that will be “entirely different” to Human Head’s version.

Arkane’s version is said to be a spiritual successor to System Shock 2 and the studio allegedly “does not plan to use anything that Human Head” created.

The site also published internal emails that it claims were sent by Arkane’s creative director Raphael Colantonio that appeared to confirm its report.
