PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has said goodbye (albeit temporarily) to perhaps its most recognisable streaming personality Dr. DisRespect,. This resulted in a clash between him and PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, though Dr. DisRespect was in character, may I add. It was all because of a motorbike. Yes, really.

During a four-player match, Dr. DisRespect and his team came across a motorbike which could only transport three at a time. Now, rather than letting one of them go and find another method of transport, Dr. DisRespect decided to pull the trigger on one of his team. Team killing can sometimes occur accidentally, and as such can be forgiven. but in this case it was deliberate and callous, though played for laughs as part of the good doctor’s character. Not long after after this, Dr. DisRespect found that he’d been banned from the game.

Dr. DisRespect is quite the popular chap, with over 650,000 Twitch followers. His streaming persona is an over-the-top pain in the backside, with a mouth like a sewer. With his mullet, wraparound sunglasses and moustache, it’s clearly a comic character and his popularity is evidence of this. But sometimes, s**t doesn’t fly.

Initially his response to the ban was rather light-hearted, trading in character comments back and forth with the game’s creator and developer, Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene (who, let’s be fair, has always been pretty reasonable and responsive to the community around the game).

Then things escalated. Dr. DisRespect wrote another ‘in-character’ tweet which wasn’t received too kindly from the developer.

Greene, instead of responding directly, quoted the tweet writing, ‘Suggesting violence is the best way to solve a disagreement is just wrong, even if you are playing a character’.

Obviously internet rationale set in, and many responded asking why Greene couldn’t take a joke. It only took a few hours before Greene wrote a rather candid response to the matter, recounting one of his own experiences, and saying that he enjoys the Dr. DisRespect character but that people should consider their words may have unintended effects on those who read them. I recommend you read the whole thing.

Dr. DisRespect isn’t banned from PUBG forever. It’s a temporary ban to show that no one is above the rules, but the episode has escalated into quite a big lesson, for all concerned. Dr. DisRespect will be back soon… perhaps with less of the Dis and more of the Respect, eh? The whole thing may have been a big joke, but sometimes your words are more impactful than they seem.
