We all know that the Nintendo DS is cleaning up in Japan, with games for the handheld dominating weekly sales charts, and until now the fastest selling game on the platform had been New Super Mario Bros. – shifting an impressive 865,024 units during its first week. This is, however, nothing in comparison to the blockbuster sales of the recently released Pokemon Diamond & Pearl.

In four days following the game’s release 1,586,360 units have been sold in Japan, according to a report from sales tracker Enterbrain. These numbers make Pokemon Diamond & Pearl the fastest selling Pokemon games ever, eclipsing the 1,425,768 units achieved by Pokemon Gold & Silver back in 1999.

Media Create, another sales tracking service, reports that the Diamond version was the more popular shifting 813,237 units, compared to 762,029 units of the Pearl version.

Pokemon Diamond & Pearl will no doubt gain similar success upon their release in North America and Europe, whenever that happens to be.
