HTC Vive’s $800 price point is setting the HTC SteamVR headset up for a loss against rivals Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR, Wedbush Securities research analyst Michael Pachter has said.

With HTC’s announcement that the consumer edition of the Vive will cost $799, Pachter feels the Rift can come out on top, but a sub-$500 offering from Sony would destroy the competition.

In the UK Oculus Rift will cost £499 plus £30 shipping, whilst the Vive is reported to set UK consumers back a whopping £689 excluding postage. Sony hasn’t put a price on PlayStation VR, but has said it will cost somewhere in the same ballpark as a new platform, which the optimistic among us are hoping will be sub-£349.
