Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, has finally revealed that the PlayStation Vita will be region free.

This means that anybody looking to import the device will be able to do so from December 17, when it launches in Japan. A UK release date has not been revealed, but is expected to be early next year.

While a Japanese unit will of course be able to play games from any other region, DLC could be locked, as is the case with many region-free PS3 titles.

Yoshida has, however, warned against importing.

“There are people who are interested in importing the Japanese version of PS Vita from outside Japan, but I personally do not recommend that,” he Tweeted.

“Sorry I’m not explaining well, but from my experience owning both US and J game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances.

“Like inconsistency between the use of x and o buttons between system software and games.”

The revelation of a region-free Vita is all the more interesting after Nintendo decided to make the 3DS region-locked – a first for a Nintendo handheld.
