The PlayStation Vita will be released in Japan on December 17, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced. The date was revealed overnight by Sony’s Hiroshi Kiwano at the platform holder’s Tokyo Game Show press conference.

The regular wi-fi model will retail at ¥24,980, while the 3G model demands a ¥5,000 premium. That’s about £205 and £250, respectively, when crudely converted into pounds.

There was no word on the European and US release dates, with these territories still expecting the handheld in the early part of 2012.
