Sony has announced that eight Yakuza games are coming to its subscription service, PlayStation Plus, this year. This is, of course, excellent news.

The first is Yakuza: Like A Dragon, which is a very good video game. Then, the rest will come pouring in. Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 will make their way onto the Extra and Premium tiers of PlayStation Plus. Also, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is on its way.

Then, later on this year, subscribers to the Premium tier are in for further treats. Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, and Yakuza 5 Remastered are all on their way.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Adam Michel, a director of content acquisition and operations, said:

“The acclaimed Yakuza series, incorporating the Kazuma Kiryu saga and latest entry Yakuza: Like A Dragon are coming to PlayStation Plus in 2022. Anyone who’s been intrigued by Sega’s long-running series will be able to experience its signature mix of crunchy combat, explorable districts, mini-games and fascinating storylines starting next month.”

Michel then goes on to talk about each game in turn. But all you really need to know is this. This is a series of exquisite and foolish soap operas, earnest and irony-free, generously and intricately designed, and as much about time and place as they are about their characters.
