The PlayStation phone, officially named The Xperia Play, was announced last night in a TV ad aired during the Super Bowl. While a bit freaky, showing what looks like a black market operation on an Android robot giving it human thumbs, it does highlight the phone’s gaming pedigree.
Information on the phone has been available for many months after a series of leaks on the internet, but the ad also confirmed the phone’s slider design, with the now recognisable PlayStation X, Circle, Triangle and Square buttons all visible on the right, with a gaming d-pad on the left. The phone will run on Google’s Android operating system.
According to the Sony Ericsson Facebook page, the new phone is to be detailed further during an unveiling on February 13.
While an Android phone with proper gaming controls is great, the software will make or break the device. Price will also be important, with Sony needing to eat into the mobile gaming market dominated by Apple and its iDevices.
