PlayStation Now will not unlock free access to streaming PS3 titles to owners of the existing Blu-ray disc, Sony has confirmed.
SCEA marketing VP John Koller confirmed the news to CVG, telling the site that such functionality wouldn’t be available “initially”.
“We… uh, initially, no,” he said, when asked whether users could use their PS3 disc to unlock a title for streaming. “So, we’re saying no to that right now.”
The functionality isn’t being investigated, either, Koller confirmed, suggesting such a feature may never be an option.
The news means that PlayStation Now users will have to rent individual titles or subscribe to the service in order to access the streaming version, regardless of whether they already own the title on disc.
PlayStation Now was announced last night and allows users to stream PS3 – and potentially PS1, PS2 and PS4 – games to a variety of devices.
