PlayStation Network was offline for 25 days in Europe and the US, but the downtime is even longer in Japan – the service has still not been resumed.
According to Andriasang, Sony is required to comply with demands from METI – the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry – before the service can resume. METI is asking Sony to detail how it’s changed PSN’s servers to offer additional security of credit card information.
One of the chief reasons for METI’s requests is that, in Japan, credit card companies are liable to compensate customers if their credit card information is stolen.
In the US and Europe, Sony has established 1 year deals with private identity theft protection companies – Affinion International in Europe, and Debix in the USA.
