After eight years of development, live-service multiplayer game Concord is now out on PlayStation and PC. Despite the game’s recent launch, Concord player numbers have been beat by new indie game Squirrel with a Gun.

Concord smashed by Squirrel with a Gun

With players struggling to find games, Concord player numbers across all platforms are low. However, on Steam, there’s less than 70 players active in the new live-service game at the time of writing.

Gamers have noted that Concord’s barely existent PC player base is miniscule. As a joking comparison, comedic indie game Squirrel with a Gun has more than 8 times the concurrent player count at the time of writing.

Right now, Squirrel with a Gun has over 568 concurrent players with a 24-hour peak of over 2,000. Since launch, Concord’s all-time high of player count hasn’t even crossed 1,000 on PC.

An indie delight

Of course, this isn’t meant to trash talk Squirrel with a Gun, but it is a fun comparison to make. PlayStation’s Concord has been developed over almost a decade and cost millions to create something players simply don’t want.

On the other hand, Squirrel with a Gun has been a fun passion project. After becoming a viral hit on social media, the game’s full development has only made the title more popular. It’s also entirely unique and not trying to appeal to shareholders banging on about industry trends.

While Squirrel with a Gun isn’t a massive indie hit like Undertale or Balatro, it is still a hit, and it resonates with players. In comparison, Concord is already dying a painful, mocked death, at least until Sony eventually slaps the game onto PlayStation Plus some day.

If you want to support a fun little indie game, Squirrel with a Gun is available now on PC. The game is also coming to Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 consoles on October 15, 2024.
