PlayStation has confirmed that the prices on all PlayStation hardware will be increasing in response to tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration. Following prior price increases across the world, the United States will be issued further price hikes.

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that it was weighing up possible price increases for PS5 consoles. With the US tariff situation continuing, the company has decided to increase prices of PlayStation hardware by $50.

PS5 Price increases in response to US tariffs

Citing a “challenging economic environment”, Sony confirmed that new PlayStation 5 price increases will be effective tomorrow on August 21, 2025.

The cost of the cheapest PS5 SKU, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, has been increased from $449.99 to $499.99. For players who want a disc drive included with their console, they will have to pay $549.99.

Alongside the base PS5 systems, the more powerful and expensive PlayStation 5 Pro, which was already criticised for its high price, will also see a price increase. This mid-gen refresh machine will cost a total of $749.99. This console also comes without a disc drive.

“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” the company explained. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

The cost of PlayStation 5 accessories has graciously remained unchanged in response to the ongoing tariff situation. PlayStation also confirmed that the company has “no other price changes to announce for additional markets”.

With PlayStation 5 consoles still seeing major price increases instead of decreases, the generation has only become more expensive for gamers. As the studio plans for its PS6 generation, it seems that launch will be the least expensive option for anyone interested in any new hardware.
