PlayStation 4’s Platinum Wireless Headset will launch January 16, carrying a premium £130 price tag.
The new headset boasts comfort and durability, but most importantly PlayStation’s proprietary 3D audio technology, previously found in PS VR. Sony states that this tech creates “highly positional 7.1 virtual surround-sound” which makes game effects sound like they are coming from all directions around the player.
To enable this fancy 7.1 sound PS4 games must feature specific support of the 3D audio tech. At launch Uncharted 4 will be patched to enable 3D audio, whilst other confirmed titles include MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Days Gone.
The Platinum headset is also compatible with mobile devices and PlayStation VR via the included 3.5mm audio cable.
Naughty Dog has put together a video highlighting the benefits of 3D audio in Uncharted 4.
You can pre-order the Platinum Headset now via Amazon.
Interestingly, this kind of virtual surround sound is coming to Xbox One consoles via a free system update in 2017, enabling Dolby Atmos on virtually any headphones.
