After predictions last week by industry publication MCV that Sony would shortly be unveiling details of a receiver kit that allowed the PlayStation 3 to access the Freeview TV service, the Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss has gone some way to confirming the speculation.

Speaking to the New Zealand publication The Press, Warwick Light said: “We’re also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder.

While the Freeview TV service is already available in the UK, it launches in New Zealand around March, meaning there could be a digital tuner available by the first quarter of 2008.

For now there is no information on any UK release, with more information highly likely to be dished out later this month at Games Convention.
