If you've ever played GoldenEye (Colm hasn't apparently, and I'm still trying to figure out how that's possible), then it's likely you encountered OddJob at some point.
The Goldfinger henchman is one of many playable characters in the Nintendo 64 shooter, and proved a perennial thorn in the side of many multiplayer matches. Why? Because OddJob is a very short man.
He's so short, in fact, that the game's auto-aim system was unable to hit him. As a result, players had to manually adjust their aim to target the little chap, all while he was capable of happily filling your arse with lead, after which point you were probably dead anyway.
However, Rare's Karl Hilton and Mark Edmonds, who worked on GoldenEye as lead environment artist and gameplay and engine programmer, respectively, have some interesting news for those of you who picked the silent, tough-as-nails baddie.
You should all hang your heads in shame. Yep, playing as OddJob in GoldenEye was officially cheating.
'It's clearly become part of the culture and folklore of the game - I noticed playing GoldenEye as Oddjob was mentioned in Ready Player One, so ultimately, I think it's fine,' Hilton told Mel Magazine.
'It's definitely cheating to play as Oddjob!' said Edmonds. 'But that can just add to the fun when you're all sitting there next to each other and berating/poking/hitting the person who chooses him.'
'Personally I like to pick Jaws and then beat the person with Oddjob just to show them! We could have put something in to stop this blatant cheating, but why not just let players decide on their own rules?'
I was a pretty good shot back in the days of GoldenEye multiplayer with my mates, so OddJob wasn't that much of an issue. Plus, using the Golden Gun helped: one shot and you're brown bread.
