PlatinumGames boss Atsushi Inaba isn't excited about the next generation of consoles from Xbox or PlayStation.

Speaking with VideoGamesChronicle at E3, Inaba explained that the consumer will see the benefits, with better visuals and faster loading times, but that doesn't mean it gets him giddy as a creator: 'it’s more of the same, quite frankly, compared to previous generations. It’s nothing that’s disruptive or super innovative, if you ask me.'

'Game hardware used to be about custom chips that you couldn’t do on PCs. Now you look at it and they’re just grabbing stuff that already exists,' Inaba told VGC. 'The Switch, for example, is a Tegra which already existed and the other consoles are using very similar chips and graphics cards to what you see on PCs, but maybe slightly updated. None of it seems unique to that hardware anymore.'

He's not down on the industry as a whole, though. Inaba expressed some joy in our streaming future in Stadia and xCloud, saying 'things like cloud platforms represent innovation and something very, very different – they’re platforms that excite me and where I feel there is a lot more innovation happening.'

During E3, Microsoft announced that the next Xbox, codenamed Scarlett, is scheduled to launch in late 2020. Here's a talking heads video of people saying a lot about it, without actually saying much.
