Borderlands has established itself as a hit new video game property. According to Take-Two, parent of publisher 2K Games, the apocalyptic, cooperative shooter has sold over two million copies worldwide and is now recognised as a “key franchise” for the company.
Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford believes his game’s success can be a lesson for everyone involved in video games.
“Perhaps Borderlands can be a lesson for all of us – that when making a video game, we should not be afraid to identify gamers as the audience,” he told IGN. “I wonder if too frequently publishers and developers are so caught up with going after new, untapped audiences that they can forget to care for the largest, most loyal and reliable audience there is – the current gamer.”
With a bona fine hit on his hands, talk of a sequel has already begun, although Pitchford remains tight-lipped on future projects.
“We are investing a lot of time in supporting the game with free updates and paid downloadable content. There will be some announcements on both fronts soon, I expect,” he said. “We have a lot of motivation to do more with the game and have a lot of lessons we’re applying not only to our immediate efforts, but to our ambitions for the future. I don’t have anything specifics to announce at this time, though.”
Borderlands is out now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
