The boy in question is the step-son of a Regulatory Compliance Manager working on the Xbox 360 project for Microsoft. He has taken home a working version of the console to test.

The images show the Xbox 360 connected to a TV, with the console having a number of cables coming from the top of the unit, said to be for testing. The images posted also include the Xbox 360 logo on the TV as well as the boy holding the console’s controller.

The boy had no Xbox 360 software to try so was only able to try out backwards compatibility and the new dashboard. Despite the boy’s claims that the images are real, they have come under some strong criticism on forums around the globe. One issue people have is whether or not Microsoft would allow for the apparently near complete console to be taken home, where problems such as this could occur. The console in the images is also missing power LEDs and there is no shot of the console actually being connected to the TV.

Taken on face value it would seem Xbox 360 prototypes are nearing final builds with backwards compatibility working on the console. This could, however, be one of many fakes that appear on the net. If the images are real then I doubt the boy or his father are on Microsoft’s Christmas card list. Unless this is more viral marketing from Microsoft, keen to get the console in the minds of gamers all around the world.
