A petition to save cancelled toys-to-life franchise Disney Infinity has gained the support of almost 10,000 fans since launching two weeks ago.
The petition, which was started by 13-year old Disney Infinity fan Tim Wanders, asks Disney to re-consider their plans to kill off the franchise and for others to show their support to help “save Disney Infinity”.
“We need to save this amazing game!” Tim says. “Help me to save Disney Infinity! We can make it together!” After reaching almost 2,000 signatures, Tim also wrote to Disney CEO Bob Iger bringing the petition to his attention.
Disney announced plans to cancel Disney Infinity and exit the console publishing business earlier this month, instead choosing to focus purely on a licensing model. Disney Infinity developer Avalanche Software was also closed in the process, with almost 300 jobs reported to have been lost.
“After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model,” Disney said at the time. “This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model. This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.”
Unannounced plans for Disney Infinity’s future appeared online shortly after the announcement of its cancellation, revealing that the firm was in talks to release larger 12-inch figures plus new content based on upcoming movies Rogue One, Cars 3, Star Wars Episode VIII, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and more.
