Once again, Blizzard has scattered the trail of crumbs for a new Overwatch hero coming to the game, and the 31st addition seems like a very eclectic persona.
The first teaser was hidden in a developer update video posted to Twitter, Blizzard’s preferred platform for releasing new information to players. Game director Jeff Kaplan settles into his introduction on new popular topics for the game before he’s swirled into a black hole and mathematical equations accompanied by music take over the update.

Cryptic. Fans leapt with enthusiasm when given the chance to decode the video, and their work has been impressive given that it’s algebraic symbols, or fancy maths. Reddit user ztokdo identified the equations and posted a theory on what they could relate to for the hero’s gameplay style – anti-gravity.
This would make them strong and defensible against projectile-based offense heroes such as Junkrat, but weak to energy weapons like Symmetra’s gun. This would offer a very different dynamic to the fight, but it’s still unclear what role they would slot into, which is of importance given Overwatch’s new role-queue system rolling out for quick and ranked matches.
Yet, with the second teaser image shown off yesterday, it’s possible that the mysterious figure has a musical talent, like Lucio.

In the image, the figure has a scientific uniform on with the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet ‘Σ’ on the suit, representing Sigma. I’m guessing it’s also their name, or maybe their official heroic-much-cooler-than-my-birth-name-name. The image wavers and glitches, with a similar melody playing to the previous teaser shown above. This music is in fact Gnossienne No. 1 by Erik Satie, identified by virtuoso TheFakeKenzo on Twitter.
Oft known as the Beyonce of Overwatch, Lucio is the only other hero associated with melodies and they support and buff teammates, so perhaps Sigma is a support role too, using the anti-gravity to protect from the continual onslaught of bullets. Would this then make Sigma the Solange of Overwatch? We’ll find out shortly, no doubt.
