Announced at BlizzCon 2019, Overwatch 2 is happening and it’s got a story mode (via Windows Central).

Yes, I am painting on my clown makeup as I type this. I said, ‘Overwatch 2? Surely not!’ To be fair, I had a decent rationale. Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch had been announced only recently, nevertheless, rumours of a sequel began to swirl as BlizzCon 2019 approached. Then, ESPN claimed that its BlizzCon 2019 demo guide stated that Overwatch 2 would be revealed over the weekend of the convention. The guide referred to a ‘story experience’ that would be shared with four players in new game modes and new maps.

And that’s exactly what we’re getting. As well as PvP modes, Overwatch 2 will explore its lore through cooperative Story Missions in which player will ‘fight to defend the world from Null Sector, uncover the motives behind the omnic attacks, and confront rising new threats around the globe.’ Push is a new PvP mode and players will help along a robot pal deliver their cargo to thei  side of the map. There will also be Hero Missions where the team will battle in a PvE mode to protect a city from ruination, and these missions bring in an entirely new mechanic.

In Overwatch 2, players will be able to level up their heroes and their abilities. For example, Tracer’s Recall can be boosted to inflict extra damage to enemies, or Reinhardt’s hammer can be augmented to speed up with every swing. These additions will make each player’s experience their own, and will lead to exciting and dynamic moments in game. Finally, the game promises to enhance its UI and comes with visual and engine upgrades that will ensure Overwatch 2 is unique.

Overwatch 2 is in development, though no platforms nor a release window have been stated yet. Watch the cinematic announcement trailer below.
