4,638,937 people participated in the Destiny beta, Activision has announced, making it the most popular console beta for a new IP in history.

Unsurprisingly it was also the largest beta on PS4 and Xbox One so far, although Activision hasn’t broken down figures for each format.

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta,” said Bungie COO Pete Parsons. “We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

The beta first went live on July 17 where it was available to PS4 and PS3 users who had pre-ordered the game. It later went live on Xbox One and Xbox 360 before opening up to all users on PSN and Xbox Live for its final weekend.

Destiny launches on PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9.
